Holly, mistletoe, poinsettias are all popular plants to have in the home at Christmas, especially in the United States and Canada.
These plants are toxic to cats so should be placed where your cat can't get to them.
Please visit Cat World for an extensive list on toxic and non-toxic plants.

Chocolate is toxic to cats, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic. Chocolate contains both caffeine and Theobromine, which are both toxic.
If you suspect your cat has eaten chocolate watch for signs of restlessness and vomiting, if in doubt, see your vet.

Just like children's toys, you should check cat toys before giving them to your feline companions. Look for small buttons, eyes and bits which can be easily torn off and swallowed.
If the toy will be chewed on, be sure it's made of non-toxic materials. If you give your cat toys with long strings or elastic,
after playtime always put these type of toys up so the cat will not get tangled on the string when you are not around.

Don't bother giving kittens under 1-year catnip. As a general rule of thumb, the ability for cats to become sensitive to catnip does not take effect until the cat becomes an adult. Another catnip tip ... catnip toys in the stores have often been 'on the shelf' long after the herb was dried, therefore like our cooking herbs, it loses it's scent.
Instead, buy a package of fresh catnip and get a pair of newborn or infant socks. Stuff them, sew them up and your cats will be in heaven when Santa comes!

The holidays are a busy time and often bring many visitors in and out of your home. Though some cats are very social, most can be frightened by a houseful of strangers.
Be sure to offer your cats a place in the house where they can escape when needed.
This location should have everything they need, so if they don't wish to join in the party they don't have to.

Unplug Christmas lights when you're not home. Cats love to chew on the wires and this of course can cause fatal electrical shock.
Our house has always had indoor only cats and we've found that a lovely artificial tree works best.
Because it's not real, cats are not as tempted to try and climb the tree.

Tinsel on Christmas Trees is a no, no when you have indoor cats. It draws their attention and when ingested it can not only cause life threatening blockages,
but can cut the stomach lining. A safer choice is to use strings of beads or large wire ribbon.
